A special, one-off performance will take place at Belvoir St Theatre on Monday 20th October as The Northcott Players – residents of Northcott housing estate in Surry Hills – take to the stage in their own production of a selection of Shakespeare’s plays, titled Shakespeare by Northcott. Northcott is a large inner-city public housing estate, a community of about 900 diverse people, many of whom are underprivileged, disabled, vulnerable or excluded members of society. The Players comprises tenants who have endured homelessness, mental health, drug and alcohol issues and/or physical disability. The Northcott Players came about when the director read the above quote and realised there was no reason Shakespeare should only available, or meaningful, to seasoned professionals or regular theatre-goers. Shakespeare by Northcott is shaped to the Northcott Experience and contains special one-of moments such as Hamlet as a hoarder, according to Director Charmaine Jones.“The group have created this production, based on a variety of the Bard’s works, on their own terms. The work includes segments from Macbeth, Midsummer’s Nights Dream and a number of sonnets. The project is lead by the Surry Hills Public Tenants Association, funded by the City of Sydney and Inner Sydney Regional Council for Social Development, and supported by Company B and TAFE Outreach Ultimo.
